The YMCA provides high-quality, sustainable out-of-school time learning opportunities and programming for students at Edison Elementary. This programming is available before school from 6:30 a.m. until the start of the school day and after school from 3:16 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

YMCA School Age Programs (Before/After) Appleton School District


Purpose

YMCA School Age Programs are dedicated to offering a quality and caring experience for children 5-12 years of age. Programs are designed to accommodate family schedules and offer children a chance to grow and develop in a positive environment conducive to developing skills and values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.


YMCA Philosophy of School Age Programs

YMCA School Age Programs are designed to encourage children to build healthy, happy attitudes and to work toward developing competencies and skills through a variety of work and play experiences. Our goal is to develop the individual child’s positive self-image, creative expression, communication skills, and motion coordination, in an environment that stimulates a desire to learn and have fun.


Before School Program

6:30 a.m. - 8:05 a.m.

The Before School program starts as early as 6:30 a.m., all students report to the Multi-Purpose Room and the depending on morning activities may relocate to different rooms in the school. Morning activities include: arts and crafts, games, gym activities, computer room, cooking club, and homework help if needed. 

At 7:55 a.m. the children line up for breakfast. The breakfast program is an additional cost for the families and the rates are $1.00 for full pay students and $.30 for reduced students per meal. It is up the individual child if they want breakfast each morning. 

At 8:05 a.m. when a supervisor is out on the playground the children are dismissed from the Before School Program and they have a brief morning recess weather permitting before starting their school day.


After School Program

3:16 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. Arrival/sign-in/snack
3:30 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Homework Time and Tutoring
4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Clubs and Enrichment Activities

The After School program runs from 3:16-6:00 p.m., all students report to the Multi-Purpose Room for check in and a snack. At 3:30 p.m. the students break up into their groups for homework time. This time is used to complete any homework and reading that needs to be done. 

Once the students have completed their homework, within their groups they will have the opportunity to participate in group activities, large group games, math and literacy based activities, centers and high yield learning activities. 

Also, during the homework hour we have Power Hour, a small group tutoring/homework assistance and one-on-one reading tutoring. The Power Hour and Tutoring is geared for students who need extra assistance in math or literacy based concepts.

At 4:30 p.m. the students move into the enrichment areas. The Multi-Purpose Room includes games, puzzles, construction activities, arts and crafts, dramatic play, and social time. The library hosts as an extra homework area for students who may need a little more time to complete their homework. 

The computer lab is open for technology activities and supervised websites; there is a 30 minute limit for students in the computer room. 

The gym and playground area are open for both planned recreational and free choice activities. All students report to the Gym at 5:30 p.m. due to the closing of the other areas.

Students also have the opportunity to participate in a variety of programs offered by our community partners who include: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Travelling Intramurals Basketball, FROG, Hmong American Partnership, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Foreign Language Club (French and Spanish), and 4H Afterschool.

The after school staff also run a variety of clubs throughout the school year which include: Cooking, Photography, Drama, Yoga for Kids, Dance, Kids Giving Back, Nature Explorers, and Origami. We survey the children in the fall to find out where their interests are in regards to our clubs.
